Xtramune™ supporting the immune system

A carrot derivative, sustainably-produced fibre Xtramune™, from Foodvalley Member Nutrileads, supports the immune system to fight respiratory infections.

Today, patients and consumers not only want their foods to be natural, wholesome and nourishing, but also to have a positive impact on their health. They are searching, for example, for support for the immune system, for increased resistance to infections, better gut health and many of the other possible health benefits arising from current nutritional science.

With this in mind, NutriLeads has developed Xtramune™: a unique, proprietary, carrot-derived fibre (currently in development) that will support immune function and, more specifically, improve resistance to respiratory infections. This fibre has the potential for many applications, such as a food ingredient in dietary supplements, functional foods and medicinal foods.

An Xtramune™ proof of concept, in a 60 person human study, has been conducted, which led to two additional clinical trials to investigate the potential benefits in different target groups. The results of the second clinical trial, involving 170 healthy subjects between 18 – 65 years of age, using a challenge model with a common cold virus, are available but under an NDA. A third clinical trial, with 600 older adults aged over 65 years with increased susceptibility to respiratory tract infections, is ongoing.

Xtramune™ is expected to be ready for formulation in dietary supplements in 2020, followed by applications for medical foods and functional foods.
