19 February 2010, Forum-building, Wageningen University
Association for Institutional and Political Economy (AIPE/VIPE) & Management Studies Group, SSG-Wageningen University Public bodies strongly influence private activities, but is their impact on economic development positive or negative? What institutional arrangements restrict or promote economic growth and business competitiveness? The debate on it is particularly strong in areas as Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and General Food Law (GFL), and in specific industries, like health and banking. The common dilemma is to how to foster public interests in environments with strong private incentives.
Three themes were selected due to their current academic ànd societal importance. They represent a multitude of dilemma’s, eg.:
- IPR should stimulate innovation but may benefit legalistic MNOs.
- Protecting consumers GFL may restrict EU-firms too much.
- Making the banking industry inherently stable may damage development.
The results of this conference will be published in a corresponding book in the VIPE-series with Edward Elgar Publishers, later this year.
