Introduction

The Dutch agro-food sector has a very international mind-set, particularly the Food Valley knowledge cluster. Both multinationals and SMBs are working with Dutch research institutes to develop new products. These institutes are doing the world’s most advanced research into new, healthy products and agro-business concepts. The sector’s numerous innovation successes are a direct result of its high density of businesses (from SMBs to multinationals), research institutes, and highly skilled professionals.

Direct access to the European market
Having direct access to millions of open-minded consumers in northwestern Europe gives the Netherlands a big edge. With 450 million potential customers, the European market is one of the world’s biggest and most advanced consumer markets. Good infrastructure give the Netherlands easy access to that market. Meanwhile, the port of Rotterdam, Schiphol airport and nearby Dusseldorf airport ensure access to the rest of the world. And let’s not forget: the Netherlands has an outstanding production environment and a centuries-old business tradition.

Major exports of food products and knowledge
With agricultural exports totaling over € 50 billion, the Dutch are the world’s 2nd biggest agricultural and food exporter after the USA. Annual turnover exceeds € 40 billion! The sector accounts for no less than 625,000 jobs – about a tenth of the Dutch labor market. The Food Valley region, research heart of the Netherlands, has a unique position in this market. Even the European Union has recognized the Netherlands and particularly Food Valley as hot spots in the food and nutrition sector.
